Emerging From Blue Shadows

Another portrait of a friend. It's simple but I like it. It was taken while we were waiting for the main act at The Butterfly Effect gig last night. My photos of the band are in the (long) process of being edited, but should be up within a week. Keep an eye out!

On Wednesday night (the 9th of December) I went along to take some photos of kyokushin karate. I think overall I could have been a lot happier with the photographs, but the dark lighting and the need for a fast shutter speed (to capture the movement) meant lower quality.

Matt Logelin

Today I came across an intersting blog via the Mamamia website (Mia Freedman's blog).

It is a blog written by a man who lost his wife the day after she gave birth to their daughter Madelin. Matt Logelin documents his travels around the world with both words and remarkable photos, taking amazing shots of his gorgeous daughter Madeline. He also publishes an insane number of photographs to Flickr.

PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God

I just wanted to post the link to this video by PostSecret, because it is beautifully shot, and also really interesting to watch. Anyone who knows about and enjoys reading the PostSecret blog will like this.

It is shot with a Canon 5d Mark II with a 28-75 Zoom Lens in Brooklyn NY.

Alan Cumming Photoblog

I came across this photoblog called Backstage At through Alan Cumming's blog, as the creator of the blog, Kevin Tachman, did a photoblog on Alan during his 'I Bought A Blue Car Today' show.

It is simple photos like these that I think are sometimes the most beautiful.

Here are a few of the photos...

My latest Flickr photo set was an alphabet project that I've been planning to do since I got my new camera. Now that uni is finished, I have all the time in the world to do it, so last Friday I started to shoot the photos for it, and I completed it this morning.

My favourite photo that I took for this set was for the letter 'C', which is a pretty cool photo of chocolate, smarties and a piece of chocolate cake. Taking this photo meant that my bedroom smelt like mint chocolate for the rest of the day. It was awesome.

I took some photos over the weekend at another gig. This time I was shooting one of my favourite live acts, Sydney band MM9. Although the gig was very dark, I did get a few good shots.

My current favourite of the photos is this one, of MM9 frontman Dan Sutherland, who is credited for the band's vocals, keys and programming.

The rain was pouring down at 7am this morning while I was watching TV, and I figured since we don't get a lot of rain, I might as well try taking some photos of it.

So I stood at the front door and set my camera to the fastest shutterspeed appropriate for the dull morning light. This was one of the better shots that I took. The details in the ripples can be seen better at a higher resolution.

Layered Self Portrait

This is an edit of a self portrait of myself. It combines two separate photos of me by using various types of layers in photoshop.

I really like the shadows in this portrait. The lighting is completely natural and the colours have been altered in post-editing.

On the 26th of September, a local band night was organised in order to raise funds for UOW's third year creative arts students and their graduation costs. I took some photos of local bands Lumiere and Arc Icarus on the night, and uploaded the best of the shots to my Flickr account. The shot below is of Dominic Connor, the extremely talented vocalist of Arc Icarus.

Today Greg (my brother) and I took A LOT of photos in our front yard, testing out shutterspeeds and just generally mucking around with my new camera. I really like this close up shot I got of him, which to me looks like something you might see in a surfing magazine or something... probably due to the ridiculous surfer hair.

Self Portrait

I took a few self portrait shots today to test out my 50mm lens and it's focus, as well as the Live View function on my camera. I got a few decent close up shots, of which this is the silliest.

Rowdy at 8am

This morning I took a bunch of photos of Rowdy before heading off to uni for an 8.30am class. This is one of the better ones, which reminds me of an actor's headshot. He's a pretty boy.

Over the weekend I got to shoot live music for the first time with my new camera. I got a bit carried away with the number of shots I uploaded that I uploaded to Flickr. I think I'm taking a quantity over quality approach!

NOTE: Although I didn't know it at the time, this was the second last time I would ever see Mammal live, and was the last time that I shot them.

Here is a photo that I took of Rowdy yesterday while playing around with my brand new camera.

I even decided that he's cute enough to make it to Flickr. He's a little celebrity.

Here's a photo taken with my brand spanking Canon 450D, which I went and bought today with the money I got from family and friends for my birthday.

The Beginning Of Flickr

Upon deciding that I will buy a Canon 450D with money that I get for my birthday, I'm going to start using my Flickr account as somewhere to publish my photos if I feel that they were worth sharing. This is a photomanipulation that I created recently with a photo that I took with my Pentax Optio A10.
It is layered in photoshop with lyrics on top of it, taken from a scan of an artwork I created.
